Rehoboam son of Solomon went to Shechem because all Israel had come there to make him king . The people asked him to lighten the hard service of Solomon, but he rejected the elders' counsel and answered with harsher words .

The kingdom divided when Israel rejected the house of David, and Jeroboam became king over Israel while Judah followed Rehoboam . 1 Kings says that Judah also did evil in his days, building high places, pillars, and Asherim .

Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem in Rehoboam's fifth year and took treasures from Yahweh's house and the king's house . Rehoboam slept with his fathers in the city of David, and Abijam his son reigned after him . Matthew names Rehoboam between Solomon and Abijah in the genealogy of Jesus .
